How many wedding photos from guests to expect?

There is no honest average. Anybody quoting you a figure has measured one wedding, or made it up, and the spread between two weddings of the same size is wide enough that a single number would not help you plan anything.

What is worth knowing is which decisions move it, because you are making most of them already. This is how to arrive at a number for your wedding rather than for a wedding in general, and what that number costs you in storage.

Where the wedding photos from guests actually come from

Guest photos can come from several parts of the day. Plan where guests may use their phones and which moments you would like them to share, rather than assuming a fixed pattern or number of uploads.

Arrival, table conversations, toasts, dancing and saying goodbye all offer different viewpoints. During the ceremony, follow the couple’s wishes and the venue’s rules. Ask for a few moments that matter to you without making guests responsible for a complete record of the wedding.

A longer party gives guests more opportunities to take pictures, but it does not tell you how many will arrive in the gallery. Some guests will contribute often and others will send nothing. Make the invitation clear and leave participation optional.

The four things that move the number

These are practical choices you can make before the day. None guarantees a particular upload count.

• Explain where to send photos. A short request and a visible card make the collection point easier to find.
• Choose a few moments you would appreciate seeing. Specific requests can help guests decide what to share.
• Plan for the devices and connection your guests will use. Try the link on another phone before printing.
• Respect the ceremony’s phone rules and guests who prefer not to take or appear in pictures.

A gallery where guests can see approved contributions also gives them something to browse. If you enable approval first, arrange for someone to review the queue. The visible grid will not fill until those photos are approved.

What it weighs

Use your own sample files to estimate a backup download. File size depends on the device, settings and any resizing. Pick several photos you expect guests to send, add their sizes and divide by the count to get a rough average for that sample.

For illustration, 1000 files averaging 3 MB would occupy about 3 GB. That is a calculation, not a forecast for your wedding or a Melora storage allowance. Video can add much more data than still photos. Check a real clip’s size instead of estimating from its duration alone. Most of them will not be keepers

This is worth saying plainly, because the count is not the point. A large proportion of what guests take is blurred, badly lit, a duplicate of the shot next to it, or a photograph of the back of somebody's head. That is not a failure. It is what a phone at a party produces and it is the price of the twenty or thirty frames that are genuinely worth having.

A guest can capture a conversation from their own table or a shared moment with friends. Those viewpoints can complement professional coverage whether the photographer stays for part of the day or the whole celebration.

Look for memories you value rather than a high count. Give the professional space to work, keep participation optional, and accept that some guest files will be duplicates or unsuitable for printing.

What to do with the number
